The listings and opinions here are courtesy of Dale Edmonds. Some additional information from Anne Chamberlain.

A note from Dale:

Singapore is a tiny island, so everything is less than 45min away by car. Quick explanation: Town/City is the central area for shops/offices (Orchard Rd the biggest). There are lots of suburbs - Tampines, Hougang etc., but if you're visiting, any cab driver can help you to these places, all are reachable by bus or train (called MRT) easily.
And from Anne: stores do not open early.

Spotlight
Fifth floor, Plaza Singapura
Orchard Road
An Australian chain. It takes up an entire floor and has lots of fabric and other craft items. They stock an aisle of yarns -- loud acrylics, some nice cottons and some nice wools. Prices are low. The brands are mostly Australian. Very good selection colors of Cleakheaton yarns - wool and cotton - and some other Australian yarns. They have a pretty good though standard collection of needles (but go out of stock fast). Pretty basic. Also buttons and other sewing accessories. Very few old patterns, almost no books.

North/Central
Emy Lee
Yarns, tools & lessons available (both knitting & crochet) in the comforts of a home. Visit http://thehandiworks.blogspot.com
You may also contact us at handworks@gmail.com if you like to drop in for a visit!

Yong Hearn
Holland Village, 3rd Floor
A small little shop with a range of interesting yarns. Angora; yarns from Italy, England, and Taiwan. Small, eclectic stock; nice staff. No books or magazines.

Golden Dragon
People's Park Centre, #02-51
In the pink building near the blue Chinatown point. My fave. They run knitting classes and are apparently the knitting shop. I think they have another outlet in Tampines, haven't seen it yet. Warning: the staff speak limited English. I got weird stares browsing. It's worth any hassle, because they have not only a wide range of yarns - American, Japanese, Taiwanese and a few English. No Italian luxury yarns like Holland Village, but the Japanese novelty yarns are great fun. They have some blah buttons with a few cool things. Lots and lots of accessories. Clover, the japanese knit/crochet company, has lots of products. Also stands of books, patterns and magazines at the People's Park Centre shop - mostly Japanese, but the patterns are readable.

Golden Horse
NorthPoint Centre, Yishun
The only shopping mall at Yishun MRT station. 3rd floor, tucked at the back. Smaller, but well stocked.

Knitting Shop Enterprise
Top floor, Golden Landmark Shopping Center
Have yet to go there, but according to Gayle Roehm (Thanks!) it's "Tiny but friendly. She gave me a "frequent customer" discount card."

Yarn shop
Tanglin Mall
Okay, my least favourite. YSO is a friend of my mother's but *still*. Lousy service. I know she speaks English, but she refused to help me <sigh&rt;. Only if you're desperate for yarn. It's a little shop in the basement, near the escalators. Tanglin Mall is at the very start of Orchard Rd, near Tanglin Shopping Centre (much nicer place to wander round). There's a limited range of expensive yarns - American mostly. Very very few needles, some patterns. Avoid.
