A note from Holly Doyne, stationed in Munich, Germany:

The list is now more extensive - I have taken all the stores I can find from all the electronic sites, visits, phone books and friends. I have added stores hours, and other notes as I can. Since the basic list was by region, it is divided that way, rather than alphabetically. Notes - the postleitzahl are equivalent to zip codes. For phone and fax purposes - the country code for Germany is 49. [Editor's note: if you are in Germany, add a 0 before the city code.] Not all phone numbers are the same length. Don't worry about it. I was not able to locate phone numbers for all stores.
Key words for looking in the Yellow Pages: Woll , Handarbeitsbedarf. Few stores carry more than one or two brands of yarn. So it is worth visiting more than one store, even in the same town. Brands of yarn are not evenly found across Germany. Regia sock yarn is all over. Lana Grossa is common across the country. GGH, On-line, are more likely found in the north. Swiss yarns are not easily found at all.
This list does not include Kaufhof, Karstadt, Globus, Herties etc. The department stores normally do accept VISA and MC, but rarely the other credit cards. Except where noted - do NOT expect that the small shops will accept credit cards. Some may take the EC card or Eurochecks. Few, if any are going to be interested in Traveler's checks. Cash is the way to go with all of the small stores. ATMs are common in all towns. If you are looking to purchase TAX FREE, you have to get the paperwork at the time of purchase. Doing the paperwork is at the discretion of the shop keeper. I have noted TAX FREE stickers in several of the Rödels in bigger cities and port towns like Kiel and Hamburg.
Most of the stores, but not all, also carry extensive needlework supplies. So if you are also interested counted cross-stitch, needlepoint, embroidery, crewel work, hardanger, etc - this list may give you a starting point.
Store Hours: Hours conform to Germany store closing laws. They are not open on Sundays. Evening hours are normally only on Thursday. Most stores have Saturday morning hours, but this is not a given.

The most reasonably priced quality yarns I have found over here I have bought from a large department store called "Globus". They are located in many areas in Germany. "Karstadt" also offers some wonderful yarns.

Apart from the yarn departments in the big warehouses (Karstadt, Wertheim, KaDeWe, are the best ones), there are some quite nice shops. In the warehouses you can make cheap finds. But if I am looking for a quality standard or special yarn, I tend to be more successful in special yarn shops.

This is a shop that carries an incredible variety of yarns on cones, and you pick out and design your own blends if you want to. They also have bins of yarn in hanks. Two rooms well organized and easy to view. They have some really gorgeous and unusual stuff. Especially great source if you are a machine knitter, as you can get some very fine yarn here.
