(From my grandmother's voluminous notes) Materials: 2 sets of size 4 dpns(or one set of long ones) ~ 4 balls of angora, or 1 ball fine mohair (like ironstone- I used some baruffa which I adopted from Oxfam for 30p ) Gauge: 6sts/inch 8rnds/inch CO 6 sts, divide on 3 needles, join. Round 1: K around Round 2: K1 and inc 1 in each st. (12 sts) Round 3: *K1, K1 and inc in next stitch. Rep from * around (18 sts) Round 4: * K2, K1 and inc in next st. Rep from * around (24 sts) Round 5: *K3, K1 and inc. 1 in next st. Rep from * around (30 sts) continue to inc 6 sts each round having one more st between inc. in each successive round until you have 96 sts. Knit one round even Work one increase round as before Repeat these two rounds until you have 144 sts. Knit 10 rounds even First dec rd: *K 22, K2 tog rep. from * around (138 sts) second dec. rd: *K 21, K2 tog. repeat from * around (132 sts) Knit 1 round even *dec 6 sts in each of the next 2 rounds K1 round even repeat previous 3 rows one more time (108 sts) bind off LOOSELY Finishing: Cut 19" piece of elastic. Work one row of sc (single crochet) on bound off edge working over elastic, skipping every 4th stitch. Tie or sew elastic to desired head size. Block over a round piece of cardboard cut to 9 1/4" (a dinner plate works). Brush. Wear :) NB: this pattern would work equally well for kids, just start the decrease rows when you have many fewer sts on the needles (i would say about 78 or 84- depending on what size you want the tam to be). This also works well for scraps, and looks rather jaunty made up in stripes...(just join in the scrap and knit until you run out of that color and tie in a new piece). I have made bunches of these and dropped them off at homeless and women's shelters.
