Date: Tue, 16 Jan 1996 18:12:16 -0600 From: vardyc@nbnet.nb.ca (Catherine Vardy) To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: knit: pattern for Knitted Sun As promised to many, here is: my "ciphering" of Meg Swansen's knitted sun from the Winter 1995 (No.41) issue of Knitter's, as shown on page 18. KNITTED SUN (by Catherine Vardy with humble apologies to Meg Swansen!) Mine turned out slightly wider (7" high by 8.5" wide, without lace), but with blocking this can be corrected. If you prefer a "rounder" version, you'll need to change the decreases to every second row and adjust the position of the openings). I used cotton yarn with a gauge of 23 sts = 4" using 4mm needles (US 6) Cast on 18 sts. Knit 1 row, purl 1 row. To increase, I knit/purl into the "ladder" between or behind the stitches. K2, incr 1, k to last 2 sts, incr 1, k2. P2, incr 1, p to last 2 sts, incr 1, p2. Repeat these 2 rows. When you have 38 sts (12 rows) make the mouth: K2, incr 1, k12, cast off 10 sts, k to last 2 sts, incr 1, k2. P2, incr 1, p14, cast on 10 sts, p to last 2 sts, incr 1, k2. Knit 4 rows, continuing increases at edges. When you have 50 sts, make the nose: K25 sts without increasing at edge, cast on 9 sts, knit to end of row (59 sts). You will no longer be increasing at the edges. P 1 row. Nose shaping: K29 sts, Sl2, k1, p2sso, k27. (Slide 2 sts knitways, knit 1, pass slipped sts over; illustrated on page 101 of your magazine to give you a centered, double decrease which forms that line down the bridge of the nose). K28 sts, decrease as above, K26 sts. Purl back. K27 sts, decrease as above, K25 sts. Purl back. K26 sts, decrease as above, K24 sts. Purl 24 sts, p2tog, p25 sts (50 sts again). Eyes: K12 sts, cast off 8 sts, k10 sts (not including st already on needle from casting off), cast off 8 sts, k11. P11 sts, cast on 8 sts, p11 sts, cast on 8 sts, p12 sts (50 sts again). Start decreasing on edges: K2, slide 1 st knitwise, k1 psso, knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2. P2, p2tog, p to last 4 sts, p1 st, slip next st knitwise and return to left needle in this twisted direction, return p st from right to left needle, pass twisted st over p st and off needle, slip p st purlwise back to right needle, p2. This gives you a decrease that slants in the correct direction from the other side. Have you just learned a new decrease? Good for you! ;-) Continue decreasing every row until 18 sts remain. K1 row, p1 row. Cast off. You can trim the eye and mouth openings with applied I-cord, blanket stich or single crochet. I'm stumped on this one, though if pressed to decide what was used, based on the photograph, I'd say I-cord. Hmmm... Knit two more "circles" as above without openings for the front backing and the back. Lace edging or sun rays: Invisibly cast on 10 sts (I crocheted a chain out of scrap yarn and knit into the back "bumps"). This will allow you to graft sts later. 1) Sl 1, k2, yf, k2tog, *(yf) twice, k2tog; rep from * once more, k1. 2) K3, (p1, k2) twice, yf, k2tog, k1. 3) Sl 1, k2, yf, k2tog, k2, *(yf) twice, k2tog; rep from * once more, k1. 4) K3, p1, k2, p1, k4, yf, k2tog, k1. 5) Sl 1, k2, yf, k2tog, k4, *(yf) twice, k2tog; rep from * once more, k1. 6) K3, p1, k2, p1, k6, yf, k2tog, k1. 7) Sl 1, k2, yf, k2tog, k11. 8) Cast off 6 sts, k6 (not incl st on needle after casting off), yf, k2tog, k1. Repeat these 8 rows until correct length. Graft end sts together. Sew it together, adding some stuffing and you're done! Congratulations! Questions or comments? Just let me know. Praise will be gratefully acknowledged, criticism or modifications seriously considered... ;-) Knittingly yours, Catherine the travelling, knitting biologist vardyc@nbnet.nb.ca --- This pattern downloaded from Wool Works: the online knitting compendium http://www.woolworks.org/
