SNOWFLAKE #1 Glossary: A lacet consists of stitches cast on and bound off individually. A picot is a small lacet with an odd number of stitches joined in the same bound off stitch A loop is the same as a large picot. Gauge: Optional Needed: 1 pair of needles and Small amount of yarn, cotton or similar. 1 small bottle of stiffening liquid ("Stiffy", Aleene's, Microwave Stiffener, etc) The assumption is that you are righthanded and knit with the right hand. If you are left handed and work from the left, just reverse the instructions for the needles. Make a slip stitch, place on left needle,*knit it and cast on four more stitches. Now make a lacet of ten stitches by casting on ten,* then binding off 9, and knitting 2 tog which joins the last stitch of the original five stitches and the lacet stitch. This lacet will wave about loosely until the sixth leg is worked, when it will be picked up. **Cast on five more stitches (10 st. on needle). Make picot. Cast on 2 sts. Pull rear stitch over last knitted stitch. Repeat for five stitches. Put stitch on RH needle on to LH needle, K2 tog. Cast on ten stitches. Make a loop of ten stitches in same fashion as picot,,join to leg. Make a second and a third all joining in the same stitch. Bind off all stitches on left hand needle including last stitch, but place stitch back on left hand needle to act as original slip stitch.** Repeat from * to *, then pick up a stitch on Leg No. 1 at the point where the loose lacet comes out of leg No. 1. Knit 2 tog. bind off rest of lacet stitches, and continue from ** to **. Leg #2 is made. Make four more legs, however with the last one, on returning to the leg having made the lacet which is joined to leg No. 5, pick up the end stitch of the loose lacet and place on left needle. K2 tog. Then continue from ** to **. Pull yarn through last stitch and make sure center stitches are all tight. If the center looks loose, pull yarn through all stitches and fasten off. Now it is time to block and stiffen. While I blocked first, I had washed it just to make sure it was clean. However if you manage to keep your work clean, you can use the stiffening liquid before you block the snowflake. Make the loops at the end of the legs look like a shamrock, open the picots with a couple of pins in each picot, and be sure the legs are not twisted before pinning it out. Follow instructions on the kind of stiffening liquid that you are using, as different manufacturers use different instructions. Merry Christmas! Have a glorious 4th tomorrow folks.
