It is more complicated to write down than to knit but you begin by casting on enough stitches to make your required length, minus a rib. I cast on 94 using 4.5mms and a DK cotton. Row 1 (ws facing) knit Row 2 K1, yf, K2 tog to end Row 3 knit. From here on join in new yarn and change stitch patterns as often as you like until sweater measures one quarter of your finished width (10ins for a 40inch finish). Leave sts on holder and return to cast on edge. Pick up same number of sts from cast on edge with whatevr yarn you want (same as you used for first side if you want it symmetrical). Work to match. Cast off about 9 or 10ins of stitches for armhole. Work 2 rows in a plainish stitch, cast on same number of stitches. Work right front to match back (unless you want a change) for 5 or 6 inches. Shape neck by casting off about 12 sts, work to end, then dec at neck edge (ie, where you just cast off) on next 10 rows. Work until front measures same as half back, minues the 4 rows you did after cast on (These are the middle of the back). Leave sts on holder. Return to sts left on holder and work left side to match. Sleeves: Using a plainish yarn and st st, cast on 20 sts, work two rows then cast on 5sts at same edge on every alt row until sleeve is length you want,. Bring in your new yarns and patterns to make vertical stripes as often as you want, but I usually do about 3ins in st st at the underarm edges. When sleeve measures same as armhole edge work pattern in reverse (if you want it symmetrical, otherwise just work same number of rows in whatever yarn and pattern you want) then begin casting off 5 on alt rows to 20sts, cast off. Join shoulders. Join underarm seam. Set in sleeves. Pick ups sts around neck edge and work a ribbed band. Pick up sts for cuffs and work about 2ins rib. Pick up sts at bottom of cardi and work about 2ins rib. these ribs can be done in one colour or stripes of whatever takes your fancy. Pick up about 12 sts from bottom of right front rib, rib across sts left on right front holder, pick up a few sts from edge of neckband. SORRY, FORGOT - actually, it is better to do left front first, then you have an idea where to place buttonholes if you want them. I just made this pattern up as I went along. As far as I know there is no printed pattern like it. It is not copyrighted, anyone can use it. It is fun to do and when you have done one you see endless possibilities for doing similar things such as sweaters, vests, etc, using your odd balls. Enjoy your knitting best wishes. good luck to USA in the World Cup - I thought they did pretty well against Germany, who look like finalists again. -- rita in sunny (for today) newcastle --- This pattern downloaded from Wool Works: the online knitting compendium http://www.woolworks.org/
