I was hunting through stitch libraries trying to find a reversible pattern that showed off the sophistication of a mohair and viscose yarn that I had. Couldn't find anything suitable, so I made up my own simple design. I didn't want to fringe the scarf, so I designed it to accomodate an elegant tassle at each end. Since there's been some interest for this type of pattern on the list lately, I thought I'd share it as my holiday gift. This project can actually be completed in a couple of evenings of TV watching, unless you stop to make popcorn! Materials Three 50 gr. balls mohair yarn (125 yds. per ball) - I used Copley Reflections, which is sort of a light mohair. Depending on the yarn you choose, you may need more. I used two balls to knit the scarf, and a small part of a third to make the tassels. Knitting needles #10 1/2 M1 = make one stitch by placing a backward loop on the needle. Decrease note: The decrease get buried in the garter stitch selvedge, so I didn't think matching decreases slanting in the proper directions were all that important. If you like working that kind of detail, by all means go ahead. Plain old k2 tog and p2 tog were good enough for me. Pattern Cast on 3 stitches. You may want to slip the first stitch of every row to make a nice edge, even though the pattern says to knit the first stitch. Row 1: Knit across Row 2: K1, M1, K1, M1, K1 Row 3: Knit across Row 4: K1, M1, K3, M1, K1 Row 5: K3, P 1, K3 Row 6: K3, M1, K1, M1, K3 Row 7: K 3, P3, K3 Row 8: K3, M1, K3, M1, K3 Row 9: K3, P5, K3 Row 10: K3, M1, K5, M1, K3 Row 11: K3, P7, K3 Row 12: K3, M1, P7, M1, K3 Row 13: Knit across Row 14: K3, M1, P9, M1, K3 Row 15: Knit across Row 16: K3, M1, K11, M1, K3 Row 17: K3, P13, K3 Row 18: K3, M1, K13, M1, K3 Row 19: K3, P15, K 3 You should now see that what you are doing is working four rows of stockinette, then four rows of reverse stockinette, with a three stitch garter stitch selvedge. Continue increasing two stitches every other row until you have 31 stitches on the needle, or until the width that you desire. Then work even in four row stockinette and reverse stockinette with garter stitch selvedge until the scarf is about four inches shy of the desired length. With a stockinette row facing you, begin decreasing as follows: Row 1: K3, K2 tog, K27, K2 tog, K 3 Row 2: K3, P 29, K3 Row 3: K3, K2 tog, K25, K2 tog, K3 Row 4: K3, P27, K3 Row 5: K3, P2 tog, K23, P2 tog, K3 Row 6: Knit across Row 7: K3, P2 tog, K21, P2 tog, K3 Row 8: Knit across Continue decreasing in this manner until 3 stitches remain. Cast off. Make 2 tassels by winding yarn around an 8" wide piece of cardboard. tie off around upper third. Attach to the scarf using the tail ends left from casting on and off. Work in any loose ends. Steam block if necessary. Hope you like it. If you have any questions, please let me know.
