I was one of those children in the 40's who really wanted a white fur muff and never got it. I decided I was a little old for a white one, consequently the "Mink" color. Of course the Pill Box Hat naturally goes with it. . "Mink" Muff Materials: 5 Balls Mink colored Mohair (Muff & Hat) (Elite LA GRAN Mohair, 74% mohair, 13% wool, 13% nylon, each ball 11/2 oz. approx. 90 Yds., Color #6576) Needle size: one set each of #4 & #7 Double Pointed 16 in.. circular needle, size #7 Gauge: On size #7 needles in stockinette stitch: 18 sts over 4 in. 28 rows over 4 in. Cast-on 52 sts on size# 4 needles. Divide evenly onto 3 or 4 DP needles. Join, being careful not to twist any sts. Knit 2 Purl 2 ribbing for 1 inch. Change to size #7 DP needles Row 1-2: Knit. Row 3: Inc every 6 sts 2 X's and every 5 sts 8 X's (62sts). Row 4-5: Knit. Row 6: Inc every 7 sts 2 X's and every 6 sts 8 X's (72sts). Change to 16 in. size #7 circular needle. Rows 7-10: Knit. Rows 11-13: Purl. Rows 14-22: Knit. Repeat p 3 rows, k 9 rows ridges for desired length of muff, (Mine was 7 ridges, including the increase and decrease ridges at each end). Note: The 9 rows of reverse stockinette stitch go to the outside. You are knitting the muff inside out. I didn't think you would want to purl the 9 rows. Decrease ridge: Knit 4 rows Next row: K2tog the 7th & 8th st 2 X's and the 6th & 7th st 8 X's Knit 2 rows Next row: K2tog the 6th & 7th st 2 X's and the 5th & 6th St 8 X's. Knit 2 rows. Change to size #4 DP needles. K2 P2 ribbing for 7 inches. If added insulation is desired you may cut a piece of high loft, or super loft quilt batting 11 ins. X 18 ins. and place inside the muff. Turn the ribbing to the inside and graft the cast on sts to the last ribbing sts. If a neck cord is desired use I-cord, Monks cord, or a gold chain to hang from neck. Or push it up on your sleeve when not in use. Hat Cast-on 8 sts, using Emily Ocher method with #7 DP needles Rnd 1: Knit Rnd 2: Inc in each st. (16 st) Rnds. 3, 5, 7, & 9: Knit.
