Please let me know if you find a problem. I've been on the list for about a year now, and have been helped, inspired and entertained by all of you, so thanks! I've been very busy making hats these days for our 6 DGS. I started with Joan's helix hat, which DGS#6 (2.5 yrs old) carries around and calls his "Annie Annie" hat (they call me Granny Annie). I then took off, using Joan's number of sts as a starting point, and her method of decreasing, but making different patterns, rather than the helix stripes. Each one has been different, fun & quick to make, and well- received. I really like the way DGS#5's hat came out, so I thought I'd share this one with you all. Little kid's hat (fits probably a 2-3 yr old): Yarn used: Dalegarn Free Style (worsted wt machine-washable wool) in a soft gray-purple and a gray-green, plus some unidentified off-white (a wool blend, probably) from my stash. Gauge: 4 st/in on size 7 (US) dpn Cast on 80 sts using the purple and join, being careful not to twist Rnds 1-10: Knit Rnd 11: Change to off-white and knit 4 rounds. Rnd 15: Change to green and knit 4 rounds. Rnd 19: Change to purple and knit 3 rounds. Rnd 22: Change to off-white and knit 2 rounds. Rnd 24: Knit 4 off-white, add green and knit 1, *k4 off-white, k1 green, rep from * around. Rnd 25: k3 white, k3 green, *k2 white, k3 green, repeat from * around. Rnd 26: k around with green. Rnd 27: k1 white, k3 green, *k2 white, k3 green, repeat from * around. Rnd 28: k3 white, k1 green, *k4 white, k1 green, repeat from * around. Rnds 29: K 2 rounds with white. Rnd 31: Change to purple and knit 3 rounds. Rnd 34: Change to green and k 4 rounds. Rnd 38: Change to white and k 3 rounds. Rnd 40: First decrease round--using white, *k7, k2tog, repeat from * around. Rnd 41: Change to purple and knit 1 round even. Rnd 42: Still with purple, *k6, k2tog, repeat from * around. Rnd 43: Change to white and knit 1 round even. Continue decreases by knitting 1 less st every other round. You wind up knitting 2 tog around at the end, winding up with 9 sts left. AT THE SAME TIME, continue using each color for two rounds, in this order: green, white, purple, white, green, purple. Cut yarn leaving enough to weave the ends, and using a tapestry needle, pick up the 9 sts and draw closed. Draw yarn to inside and tie off. Weave in ends. I-cord top: Make an I-cord (I used green) that's about 4 inches long; bind off. Tie it so there's a knot in the middle of the cord. Thread both yarn ends through a tapestry needle and draw to inside, tie off. This gives a little bobble-y thing on top, where the sides are about 1 inch long, and then there's the knot in the middle.
