A number of folk have asked me for my hot-water-bottle cover pattern, and as I'm fairly sure it's original I thought I would post it here: For the knit cover, take some yarn (duh!!!) and needles which knit it to a sensible tension (gauge). You probably don't want to go any heavier than worsted. Cast on 1 stitch. 1st row: K into front, back and front of 1st stitch (3 stitches) 2nd and EVERY alternate row: purl 3rd row: k1, k into front, back and front of next stitch, k1 (5 sts) 5th row: k2 ((yarn round needle, k1) twice, k1 (7 sts) 7th row: k2, y.r.n, k3, y.r.n., k2 (9 sts) 9th row: k2, y.r.n., k 2 tog, y.r.n, k1, y.r.n. sl 1, k1, p.s.s.o (or whatever right-sloping decrease you use), y.r.n, k2 (11 sts) 11th row: k2, y.r.n., k 2 tog, y.r.n, k3, y.r.n. sl 1, k1, p.s.s.o (or whatever right-sloping decrease you use), y.r.n, k2 (13 sts) 13th row: k2, (y.r.n., k2 tog) twice, y.r.n. k1, (y.r.n., sl 1, k1, p.s.s.o.) twice, y.r.n., k2 (15 sts) And so on and so forth, increasing 1 stitch either side of central stitch as before, until r.h. side of slope will fit the length of the hot water bottle, or slightly longer, finishing with a wrong-side row: Next row: k1, (right-sloping-decrease, y.r.n) to last 2 stitches, k2. Next row: purl Work thus until left-hand slope will wrap comfortably around the hot- water-bottle, again finishing with a purl row. Now count your stitches and find some way of marking the central stitch. Next row: k1, right-sloping-decrease, repeat (y.r.n, r.s.d) until you reach the centre stitch, k1, repeat (k2 tog, y.r.n.) to last 3 stitches, k2 tog, k1. Next row: purl Next row: k1, repeat (r.s.d, y.r.n) until 3 centre stitches are reached, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o. repeat (y.r.n, k2 tog) to last stitch, k1 Next row: purl Continue in this way until 7 stitches are left, finishing on a purl row. Next row: k1, r.s.d., k1, k 2 tog, k1 (5 sts) Next row: purl Next row: k1, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o, k1 (3 sts) Next row: purl Next row: k 3 tog, pull yarn through and fasten off. Sew the two shorter sides together, and one of the longer sides (if you like, as I do, to hang your h.w.b.s upside down, leave a gap in the middle for the hanging-string to poke through!). Make a cord (twisted cord, crochet, however you like!), and thread through the open end to use as a drawstring. -- Annabel Smyth ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Annabel@amsmyth.demon.co.uk --- This pattern downloaded from Wool Works: the online knitting compendium http://www.woolworks.org/
