I'm busy plotting up an original cotton counterpane for The Larval One (due in May). I haven't hit on the right border yet to go with this hex, and I'm still working on the triangles and half-hex motifs to fit in around the edges, but I'm so excited by the motif itself that I had to brag. The center flower was loosely inspired by the Azalea teacup coaster in the first Kinzel book, but I altered all proportions and took enough liberties with both the flower and the background that I feel I can count this as 90% mine. The final appearance is a solid six-pointed flower. In between the petals are triangles of seed stitch (mostly obscured, but leaving a nice contrasting texture) pierced by 4-eyelet diamonds. A pile of these sewn together should present a field of dense flowers that touch tip to tip, floating on a contrasting filigree. As soon as I remember to bring a finished, blocked motif in to work I'll scan it and post the picture on my Web page. Look for it by the end of the week... This motif is knit in the round on double pointed needles. I started out with three (plus one to knit with) - two petal repeats per needle. After Row 11 I switched to six (plus one) so that each petal repeat was on its own needle. Those who aren't as dpn-happy as I am might want to use the smallest size circular after row 11 or so; or stick to 3 longer dpns throughout. I haven't picked out the yarn for the final product yet. I'm doing my experimentation in Southmaid Cotton 8 - a heavy DK, almost worsted. I've made crib blankets from it before and find it both too heavy and prone to splitting. I'll probably pick a nice light-end DK or heavy sport cotton with a firm finish. Possibly in a deeply saturated color. More think-time will be needed for yarn choice... - - - - Mountain Laurel Hexagon - Corrected Version A Motif for Counterpane Knitting Kim Salazar January, 1998 Special Instructions: M1 - Knit into the back of the bar between the stitch just knit and the next one to be knit.
