Try holding it by the center of the crown and shaking it sharply before pulling it firmly onto the bowl. You'd be amazed how malleable fulled wool is when damp. And yes, up to a point, you can size up just by putting the dampened on a bigger bowl. Personally I like my brims to roll up nicely, so I never do use the size 13 needles that most of the patterns call for. I start on 11s. I also add a couple of plain K rows at the center of the crown, so I'm not doing decreases on top of decreases in successive rows; making holes that refuse to close up in the felting. In fact I've completely re-written the pattern: Helen's Fabulous Fulled Hat Variation Materials: 2 skeins(appromixately 100 gr ea) of about worsted weight Romney handspun or 1 each wool and mohair, or 1 skein of chunky wool, etc. >16" to 20" Circular needles size 11 >DP needle size 11. Note: Work the entire hat using 1 strand of each yarn. Original pattern calls for starting on size 13 but #11 needles throughout gives a curled-up brim that I find more flattering to wear. Begin: Cast on 100 sts loosely on #11 circular needles. Join and Knit even for 2". * Dec 10 sts. evenly around (90 sts). Knit evenly for 3" * (you now have a total of 5" knit). (K3, K2 tog) for 1 round (72 sts). Continue decrease pattern into next round (twice) until you have 70 sts. Knit 8" more (13" total from beginning) CROWN: Row 1: K2 tog, K5, Row 2: K Row 3: K2, K2tog (change to DP needles now) (45 sts) Row 4, K Row 5: K2 tog, K1 (30 sts) Row 6: K Row 7: K2 tog around (15 sts) Row 8: K Then K2 tog around until you have about 6 sts left. Thread yarn into tapestry needle and pull to inside. Fasten tightly. Full in washer and dryer with full loads of non-shedding dark clothes, such as blue jeans(no terry towels!), until shrunk to approximate size, shape over 1/2 gallon ice cream tub , or other suitably shaped bowl, while still damp, or use a Jiffy steamer to shape dry hat on the form. * A further variation that looks pretty nice is to reverse these measures (K 3 inches, decrease, then 2") NIFTY JOIN CO an extra stitch at end of count. Slip first stitch onto right needle. Pass extra stitch over it. Slip first stitch back to left needle. Commence knitting as usual. ..
