Draw thread through stiches, gather and fasten To Felt: After much experimentation I found the following worked the best for me. The most important thing is to make sure the hot water is really HOT: warm water does not work. Depending upon your washing machine (I live in an apartment and have to use the machines here-very few options) you can figure out what works best for you. Set washer to small load (if you can-I couldn't) HOT wash-COLD rinse Let washer fill with hot water-add about 1 cup Ivory Soap Flakes and 1/4 cup baking soda for full load (less if you can set small load)-stir to dissolve. Add finished hat and at least one old tennis shoe or slipper (I used 3 for full load)-these beat against the hat while washing and help yarn to felt. Don't use anything that attracts lint or that you may ruin-the mohair gets all over everything! Do as many full loads as needed until hat is correct size-you will be able to tell. I put it on my head right after washing to shape the crown. These hats take a long time to dry-at least 24 hours. I discovered that the cable box atop my TV is just warm enough to speed the drying without ruining the hat. Again, I have been experimenting with yarns, etc. Would love to hear about results if you do. --- This pattern downloaded from Wool Works: the online knitting compendium http://www.woolworks.org/
