Date: Tue, 16 May 1995 14:29:52 -0500 From: Janet Curtis To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: KNIT: Baby blankets, et.al., LONG Entrelac Baby Blanket -- I have received enough requests for the entrelac baby blanket that I will post the pattern here. Due to the fact that I have never written down directions for anyone else to follow before, please let me know if these are not clear. Emily, if you are reading, feel free to put this pattern on your home page. Janet's Entrelac Baby Blanket This is an "original" pattern. In other words, I did not borrow, adapt, copy, or otherwise take anything (except how to do entrelac) from any other source. I would like to apply the Free Software Foundation "copyleft" idea to it. In other words, you are free to use it, copy it, give it away, as long as you include this notice with it and you do not sell it. I try to make a blanket that is about 28" x 36", otherwise it gets too heavy for easy use with a baby. I use a sport or baby sport weight yarn. In fact, the most recent one is done from Mary Maxim's Baby Soft (Double Knitting) yarn. I have four skeins of white (main color) and 2 skeins each of aqua (A), blue (B), and yellow (C). I aim for a gauge of about 5 st/in. It makes a softer blanket if not knitted too tightly. (These are 100 g skeins of yarn.) Lousy ASCII art (use a fixed width font) of the basic appearance. __________________________________ | | ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| ||\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/|| ||/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\|| |__________________________________| Basic directions: With main color cast on 112 st. Establish 16-6st half-entrelacs making sure to k2 tog for the last st of each one. (The extra stitches are to make the edge a little more elastic than casting on 96 stitches.) Alternate each of the contrast colors with the main color ending with contrast A. I usually work to about 30-34 inches in length, depending on yarn availability. I find that 5 repeats of the 3 color sequence, ending with one more repeat of the starting contrast color works well for size. Finish off with half-entrelacs in main color. BORDER -- garter stitch (or your favorite non-rolling stitch) With main color, and circular needle, pick up all the way around the edge of the blanket, putting a marker at each corner. Work circular garter stitch starting with p1 rnd. I am known to vary the width of the border, depending on desired size and amount of yarn left. I either work 4 rnds main, 2 rnds C, 4 rnds main, 2 rnds B, 4 rnds main, 2 rnds A, 4 rnds main -- or some other variation. Sometimes I end with the "dominant (A)" contrast color. Sometimes I work in 6rnds main/4 rnds color. Be sure and increase 1 st on each side of corner stitch on EVERY (or to fit garter stitch gauge) row to mitre the corners. Obviously you will have to work a swatch in garter stitch to know how many stitches to pick up. I find that, for me, picking up 7 st along each edge of each entrelac works well. For stability of the edge, you do need to do at least 1" worth of border. This design obviously leaves itself open to lots of variations. You could do more colors, one contrast color, all one color,... The mind boggles.
