It's embarassingly easy--here in the US we have these t.v. ads for rice krispie squares, where the family makes a big fuss and the woman pretends she worked really hard, but in reality she ws reading romance novels. Well, this throw makes me feel like that--DH was oohing and aahing over it and... It goes like this: Choose 3 or 4 fine gauge yarns to use as one. Use as big a size needle as you're comfortable with. Cast on as many stitches as will fit. Knit in garter st until you run out of yarn or until the throw is as tall as you like. Bind off. Attach fringe to 2 ends. Et voila--a beautiful throw (or afghan lite as I like to call it). I got the idea from the incredibly friendly woman at the factory store in Lowell Mass (I got the suggestion to go there from my invisible friends, of course). She was making several wedding gifts, all with fluffly mohairs and silks. Me, I'm allergic to mohair, so this is what I did: green-black-blue variegated chenille (store-bought at M.J. Designs) white, blue, aqua slubby cotton (got at a yard sale!) pale blue linen/cotton/viscose (from Webs grab bag) gray/black cotton tweed (from Webs grab bag) I used #17 needles (and switched to circulars when I knit the first row and the thing simply exploded in width) and worked until the gray/black tweed was done. Then I edged it (I don't care for fringe) with a strand of the variegated chenille and black chenille with a size K crochet hook, single crochet. Et voila! It measures 5 feet by 3 feet and gosh is it warm. AND IT ONLY TOOK ME THREE WEEKS! I'm making one for my artist-type cousin who graduates from h.s. next month-- she'll love (I hope) the soft black wool (I bought in Lowell), plus a black chenille, black rayon and gray heather I got at webs. Probably will be edged in black and variegated ruby-magenta-black chenille. And then my cousin Maggie's wedding in August, and my mom's graduation from college in December... Anyhow, sorry to ramble on about this ridiculously simple project, but I guess that's what gives me the most joy--the structure is so easy it gives lots of room for imagination with fibers and colors.
