DONAKOWSKI'S QUICK CHILD'S BOW TIE SCARF cast on 20 stitches on #8 (AMERICAN) needles Knit in garter stitch to make 12 rows of garter ridges (24 rows)..It should look like a squarish rectangle... Then: Knit a stitch, then put next stitch on a stitch holder...all across the row... So you have half on needle and half on stitche holder (but they are alternate stitches)... Knit the ones on needle for five garter ribs (ten rows). Put these on stitch holder... Put the stitches on first holder on needles and knit ten rows... Now you have two flaps... Then: Knit one stitch off needle, then one stitch off stich holder (every other one) until all stitches are back on needle. You have the first part of the bow and a knitted slit... Knit in garter to fit comfortably around child's neck... Then: Repeat divided stitch knitting... Then: Knit 12 more garter ridges (24 rows)... Place one bow end through the slit... This gives you a scarf that looks like a bow tie... Yet is warm... uses up odd ends of yarn... and cute... Learned this years ago from my neighbor Mrs. Donakowski who taught me to knit when I was a little girl...
