The following knit sweater was designed by Arlene in Toronto
(quanah@user.rose.com)
for the Emily doll. Her measurements are very close to the American Girl
dolls, so it may fit with few if any adjustments.
To fit a 19 inch doll. 10 1/2 inch waist, 10 inch sleeve (from middle of
back to wrist), 5 1/4 inch back.
Note that I work in number of rows, not inches, so I have included row counts
plus inches.
- 50 gm ball of sports weight yarn (Patons Astra)
- 4.0 mm needles
- 5 buttons
Back
CO 38 sts.
Work K1, P1 for 4 rows (equals 1/2 inch).
Purl next row, increasing 4 sts evenly spaced (42 sts).
Work in stockinette stitch (st st) for 3 inches (20 rows st st) from the
beginning.
Shape armholes
Cast off 3 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st each end of
the needle every other row, 2 times (32 sts). Continue until 5 inches from
the beginning.
Shape neck
K across, placing middle 8 sts on a holder after knitting them. Work one
shoulder at a time. At neck edge only, cast off 3 sts, then decrease 1 st
every row at neck edge 3 times (6 sts). Work until 6-inch from beginning.
Cast off. Join yarn and work other shoulder to correspond.
Left front
Cast on 16 sts.
K1, P1 ribbing for 4 rows. Purl next row, increasing 1 st (17 sts).
Work in st st for 3 inch from the beginning (20 rows of st st).
Shape armhole
Cast off 3 sts at the beginning of the next right side row. At the arm edge,
decrease 1 st every other row, 2 times (12 sts). Continue st st until 4
1/2 inch from beginning (32 rows st st), ending after a
knit row.
Shape neck
Cast off 3 sts, purl 9 st to the end of the row. At the neck edge only,
decrease 1 st every row, 3 times (6 sts). Continue until 6 inch. Cast off.
Right front
Work to correspond, reversing all shapings.
Sleeves
Cast on 16 sts.
K1, P1 ribbing for 4 rows. Purl next row, increasing 3 sts evenly (19 sts).
Work in st st, increasing 1 st each end of the needle every 5th row, 3 times
(25 sts). Work until 5 inches from the beginning (37 rows of st st).
Shape cap
Decrease 1 st each end of the needle, every other row, 2 times (15 sts).
Work 4 rows even. Decrease 1 st each end of the needle, every row, 3 times
(9 sts). Cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows (5 sts). Cast
off.
Finishing
Sew shoulder seams. Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
Button band
Beginning at the bottom of the sweater on left from, pick up 24 sts. K1,
P1 ribbing for 3 rows. Cast off.
Buttonhole Band
Beginning at the neck edge of the sweater on right front, pick up 24 sts.
K1, P1 ribbing for 1 row. Next row, rib 3 sts, (cast off 1 st, work 4 sts,
cast off 1 st, work 5 sts) 2 times. Rib to the end.
(5th buttonhole will be in the neckband). Next row, K1, P1 ribbing, placing
a YO at cast off space. Cast off.
Neckband
Pick up 48 sts around neck edge, including 8 sts on holder. K1, P1 ribbing
for 1 row. Place 1 buttonhole on the 2nd row at the right front edge, 2nd
st from the end. K1, P1 for 1 row, with YO the cast off st for buttonhole.
Cast off.
Steam lightly to block. Sew on 5 buttons to correspond to the buttonholes.
