Date: Sat, 27 Jul 96 07:04 PDT From: Judy Gibson To: Miniature Knitting list Subject: Correction to Barbiewear Dear Miniknitters, [...] RAGG HIKING SOCKS FOR BARBIE The yarn begins its life as acrylic worsted. Cut off an adequate length of the 4-ply yarn and separate the plies into two 2-ply yarns. It's hard to do more than a few yards at a time. Each sock requires about 10 feet (3.5m) of yarn. Using the Woolease "ragg" color (1 ply gray, 3 plies natural), separate a gray and a natural ply for your socks. (Save the natural 2-ply for another project.) This knits on American size 00 (1.75mm) double pointed needles. Warning: I don't think this would be a good pattern for your first try at knitting socks, at least at this scale. It really helps to have done it before. Cast on... 12 stitches distributed over 3 needles Join... and work in k1 p1 rib for 7/8" (about 12 rounds) Heel flap... on 6 stitches knit 4 rows plain stockinette. Turn the heel... starting on a right-side row, k3, SSK, turn p1, p2tog, turn k1, SSK, turn p1, p2tog, turn (2 stitches remain) First round of foot... k2; pick up and k 3 stitches along edge of flap; k across top of foot (6 sts); pick up and k3 stitches along edge of flap. K1 from the next needle onto this one so that the break between needles comes at the center of the bottom of the foot. You now have 8 sole stitches and 6 instep stitches. Adjust so they are on three needles: 4+6(instep)+4. Gusset... Next round, dec 1 each side of foot at the spot where the top and sole meet, thus: k3, k2tog, k4, SSK, k3. Foot... Since Barbie's feet taper abruptly to her toes, you will need to try the socks on every round or two to see how it's going. You will want to stop knitting when the very tip of her toes are just peeking out. Knit 1 or 2 rounds plain. Decrease round: dec 1 st each side of foot as before (10 sts remain). Knit 1 round plain. Decrease 3 sts evenly spaced around, by knitting 2 tog. (7 sts) Try on. Knit another round if needed. Cut off yarn about 5" long. Thread end through tapestry needle and run through the remaining stitches, tie off and bury end. Copyright Judy Gibson, 1996.
