I know, I know - I promised to post this last week. What can I say except that life doesn't always follow a straight path! Anyway, here's my Mom's bootie pattern as she gave it to me. She's been making booties this way for the past fifty years. I wish she had kept records of how many pairs she's made - must be several hundreds. Every baby she heard about had handknit booties. My kids had many pairs in all sizes, and they don't kick off! It's a great pattern, and easy to knit. She always used synthetic yarn - didn't like to knit with wool (!) - but anything can be used. At the end of the pattern I'll add the things I discovered the first time I made it. JANE'S BABY BOOTIES Cast on 10 stitches on #1 (new born), #2 or #3 needles for sole. Work back and forth over 2 needles in garter stitches (K all around for 36 rows, 18 ridges). Pick up along side, 18 stitches on 1 needle - then 10 stitches on other side with another needle and 18 stitches on third side with same needle. Work all around as follows: P 4 rounds, K 4 rounds, P 4 rounds, K 4 rounds, P 4 rounds. Work on needle with 10 stitches for instep. Pick first stitch off side needle for 16 rows. K or P 10 and 11 (pick off st) together. Turn. Repeat. Now work all around all stitches K1, P1 for 3 rounds. Next round *K1, P1, YO, K2tog* and repeat all around. Then K1, P1 for 3 more rounds. Knit 22 rounds and bind off loosely and roll down top for cuff. Thread ribbons through eyelets. Ann's notes: I just finished a pair out of Bucilla Lollipop. This is a synthetic that wraps at 15 w/in. I got a sole that measured 2.5" in length on US#1 needles. The finished pair weighed 15g. The needle sizes at the beginning of the pattern give the various sizes with 1's being new born, 2's larger, and 3's larger yet. After the sole is completed, pick up a long side and the short side on one needle, and the other long side on a third. If you have a five needle set it'd be that much easier. The instep instructions need clarification. The decision is yours as to whether you knit or purl the instep. It could also be done in pattern. Anyway, when you get to the last stitch of the working 10, knit or purl it together with the first stitch from the side needle. The next row is worked back and the end stitch and one from the needle on the other side are worked together. Repeat. This closes the seam around the base of the bootie and the instep. After all the instep stitches are knitted and you begin the ribbing, at the end of the first round of ribbing, just before you knit the first stitch of the instep, pick up the bar before the instep stitch and knit it WITH the instep stitch. Mom had always complained about the "hole" that formed at this point, but she didn't know what to do about it. I told her I was going to share this with my new knitpals, and she was thrilled. We both hope you enjoy it.
