Materials: about 12 oz of cobweb wt. shetalnd wool...acrylic baby wool would work as well. Sz 5 (3 3/4 mm) needles (I recommend circulars, as the weight is resting in your lap, not straining your shoulders. The stitches also are not jammed onto the needles). Gauge (not horribly important, but I measured, just in case): 1 pattern=2 3/4" 8 rows/inch Finished measurement: 40" x 40" Cast on 336 sts. (14 patterns of 24 sts each) (I put markers between each repeat, so if I lose my way, only one repeat has to be looked at) K 1 row, then start pattern. Shale fan: Row 1: K2tog 4 times;*yo P1 8 times: K2 tog 8 times; repeat from *across row ending YO P1 8 times, K2 tog 4 times. Row 2: Knit Row 3: Purl Row 4: Knit Repeat these 4 rows 5 times more, work 4 more rows of stocking stitch (stockinette) between 6th and 7th ridge. (TOtal of 7 rows of stockinette between 6th and 7th ridge). Repeat from row 1 until shawl is square (mine has 14 repeats). Finish and block as desired. Mine was meant to have fringe, but i ran out of wool and i got seriously tired of waiting to finish it, so it frankly has yet to get fringe on. Don't worry if it looks an ugly duckling when it is not yet blocked, once it is blocked (on the floor, or bed-no pins in the waterbed please) it will transform into a beautiful swan.
