Count the number of rows to the shoulder. You will need to decrease 1/2 the back neck stitches for each side of the V-neck. (For an odd number leave one stitch on a holder at the point of the V.) Divide the number of rows by the number of decreases. That tells you what row to do the decs. Example: 42 rows divided by 21 [half the 42 stitches for back neck] gives you 2 -- decrease every other row. I made that come out even, of course, but use the closest SMALLER multiple. If you have enough rows to decrease every 4th row, the V will be longer and slimmer. You can do every other row and the top part of the neck line will be straight as you complete the rows to the shoulder. Decreasing on EVERY row makes a U-shaped neckline. Thus endth the lesson . . .
