Several books show how to do this and I like the Ondori _Basic Knit_ description the best. When you reach the point in the garment where you are going to bind off, instead use short rows. The example in the book is for a top that is shoulder that is 15 stitches wide. On the right shoulder, begin on the purl row. 1. Row 1: Purl across leaving 5 stitches on the left needle. 2. Row 2: Turn garment to the right side. Yarn over needle, and slip the first stitch onto the right needle. Knit to end of sleeve. 3. Row 3: Knit across leaving 11 stitches on the left needle (this includes the yarn over you made). 4. Row 4: Turn garment to right side. Yarn over needle, and slip the first stitch onto the right needle. Knit to end of sleeve. 5. Finishing row: purl across to the first yarn over. Switch the positions of the yarn over and the NEXT stitch and then purl these two stitches together. This will prevent the hole from the yarn over. Purl to the next yarn over and repeat. Purl to en overs together with the stitch before them (purl tog.) so you end up with 15 stitches again. This prevents the hole where the yarn over was. For left shoulder: (Row one was worked before neck area was cast off) 1. Row 2: Attach yarn at neck edge, knit across to last 5 stitches. 2. Row 3: Turn to wrong side, yarn over purlwise, and slip 1 stitch. Purl to the end. 3. Row 4: Turn and knit across leaving 11 stitches on the left needle (this counts yarn over). 4. Row 5: turn to right side, yarn over, and purl to end. 5. Finishing row, knit to yarn over and knit 2 together of the yarn over the next stitch. Knit to next yarn over and repeat. Knit to end. This would have to be altered to fit your pattern, but that should be do-able. I would recommend getting a book with pictures to help you. Good luck!
